There are thousands of kid friendly games out there beloved by both children and their parents. One such game is “Roblox”, which is very popular among kids and have over a 100 million registered users. On April 16 a father ended up paying a lot of money to Roblox.
On April 16, Steve Cumming, father of an 11 year, ended up paying £4,672 (~Rs 3,88,560) to Roblox. Steve, was supposed to pay a one time sum of £4.99 via his debit card.
“My daughter told me all her friends were playing this game and she wanted to spend £4.99,” Mr. Cumming said. “She made that purchase using my debit card on 16 April and I thought nothing more of it.”
After realizing what happened, Steve immediately contacted the bank and blocked his card, but the damage was already and done and soon another £1000 (~Rs 83,976) were deducted from his bank account from Google Pay.
Steve admitted that didn’t pay attention to the terms and conditions of the game and was surprise how a kids game can charge so much money.
However, not everything is dark and gloomy, because Steve was initiated a refund from Roblox and they also gave their official statement on the situation.
“We strive to prevent unauthorized purchases, by taking measures such as not storing billing information, and work directly with parents to provide appropriate refunds whenever possible, which is the case in this instance,” Roblox told the BBC.
We can be happy for the fact that the 11 year old’s father got his hard earned money back. Lesson learned from this incident is to always keep a check on your kids, see what are they upto in their mobile phones, and never give them too much freedom with your bank account details, I would say never share your financial details with children until they are of certain age.
