Our honorable prime minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated India’s first ever Optical Fibre project for Andaman Nicobar Islands. The optical fiber will connect Chennai-Andaman Nicobar islands.
You must be wondering what is Optical and why it is such a big deal? Optical Fibre is a technology that transmits information as light pulses along with a glass or plastic strand or fibre. That results into high-performance transfer over long distances.
This is going to be a massive leap for Indian technology and telecom industry as they can provide their high-end service in Andaman and Nicobar islands which was not possible before. The project is also suppose to connect other islands like Long island, Ranjat, Kamrota, Little Andaman, Swaraj Dweep, Car Nicobar and Greater Nicobar.
The overall length of the submarine optical fibre cable is 2312 kilometers and costed about 1224 crores. The entire project was undertaken by BSNL and is completed in 24 months.
Airtel is the first telecom company to make a move in Andaman & Nicobar islands and also gave an official statement about this with the commissioning of the fiber link, “Airtel has become the first mobile operator to launch ‘Ultra-Fast 4G’ services in Andaman and Nicobar,” they said.
According to various sources, the Internet speed for all the islands will be about 200 GBPS.
