According to a report by Wall Street Journal, Twitter is in preliminary discussion to acquire TikTok. Twitter is the newest entrant in the TikTok acquisition race. It’s not clear yet, that Twitter will actually make TikTok an offer.
There are many hurdles in front of any deal and the biggest of it is the Trump administrations executive order passed on August 6th which bars ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok from making any transactions in the US. The order will take effect within 45 days.
Another potential hurdle is Microsoft, which is said to be a front runner for TikTok acquisition and the only company so far who have acknowledged it. But according to WSJ a possible acquisition by Twitter seems like a long shot, simply because Twitter doesn’t have the funds to pull that off.
Twitter is very small compared to Microsoft no matter how you count it, a potential Twitter-TikTok deal is very unlikely.
However, there is no official comment on the news by Twitter, but in the other hand Microsoft said in a blog post on August 2 that its CEO Satya Nadella had a word with president Donald Trump about a possible acquisition of TikTok which is expected to wrap till September 15th.
