You’re installing Windows XP Virtual Machine from scratch. So to store the installation file, you’ve to add a virtual hard disk to the new machine.

If you have any existing files, proceed by selecting the “Use an existing virtual Hard Disk file” option or choose the “Create a virtual hard disk now” option and hit “Create”. The VirtualBox will automatically set the hard disk size as 10GB. Which is recommended.

In the next window, select the type of virtual hard drive. If you don’t want to use a VM, choose VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) and hit “Next”.

However, Oracle always recommends you use VDI. Selecting VHD helps you to run it under Windows Hyper-V in case you change your mind in the future.

Step 6 – Storage on Physical Hard Disk:

Here you’ll be offered with two options – one is “Dynamically allocated” and another one is “Fixed size“.

Choose whether the new virtual hard disk file should grow as it is used or if it should be created at its maximum size i.e dynamically allocated hard disk file will only use physical hard disk space.

Oppositely, the Fixed-size hard disk file may take longer to create on some systems and also unnecessarily fills the host disk space.

We recommend you choose the Dynamically allocated option. So that only the disk space required by the VM will be allocated automatically on the host disk.

Read the Windows Licensing agreement. To view the full text, continue with the page down key. After reading the agreement, hit the F8 button to accept the Licensing Agreement.

In the next screen, press the C key to configure the unallocated disk space or hit enter to automatically organize the disk space and format the system disk. After that, edit the disk space to allocate.

Note – Use all of the disk space because if you configure virtual disk size to 100 GB, it uses 20 GB of disk space to set up and 80 GB for backup.

Once the new partition is created, select it and Hit Enter to start the Windows XP installation.

Next, select the “Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick)” option using the arrow key on the keyboard. It will format the virtual disk of the guest machine.

Wait for a few seconds until the virtual disk is formatted. When it is finished, all the system files of XP will be copied to the disk. Once everything is copied, the virtual computer will automatically restart within 15 seconds. You can press enter to restart the virtual system.

Here you’ll see the Windows XP interface. Configure your region and language according to the country you live in. After that, type your full name and organization that you’d like to use in the virtual system and hit “Next”.

Enter the 25 character Windows XP product key you recently copied in archive.org and click “Next”.

If you’d like to use the Windows guest machine as more than one computer, make sure to use different names on each device. In the Computer name field, type the PC name and create an administrator password.

Next, configure date, time and time zone and select “Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes” and click “Next”.

In the Networking Settings window, choose either typical settings and click “Next”. Custom settings allow you to manually configure networking components.

Typical settings create network connection using the Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks, QoS Packet Scheduler and TCP/IP transfer protocol with automatic addressing.

In the Workgroup or Computer Domain window, select WORKGROUP and then click Next if you’d like to use your virtual machine for personal use without being a member of the domain environment.

Wait until Windows XP is installed on the guest machine. For copying all the files, the setup will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Once all the files are copied successfully, your system will restart with a familiar start-up sound. That’s it, you’re ready to rock on Windows XP in VirtualBox.
